tarnish
1. to lose or cause to lose the shine, esp by exposure to air or moisture
resulting in surface oxidation; discolour: silver tarnishes quickly
2. to stain or become stained; taint or spoil: a fraud that tarnished his reputation
3. a tarnished condition, surface, or film
I prefer an aged look to a polished one. More interesting to my eye.
I have a collection of old family pieces displayed in my home that I leave to tarnish.
This should have been in my background stories post.
I often use it for small things I want to photograph.
Do you prefer polished or tarnished?
Tarnished is more interesting, but I have to admit, when it gets too dark and klunky, I like to polish it up some. Not to perfection, necessarily, but enough so you get more contrasts back.
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures!
Happy A-Z'ing!
Thanks! At some point I will polishe them a bit I think. Most are on display up high so I forget about them.
DeleteI was born and raised to polish. But now that i reflect on your post and photos, I wonder why I continue to do this.
ReplyDeleteBecause it's tradition? Leave it alone & see how you feel about it.
DeleteI spent hours as a child polishing silver but looking at your photos I see how beautiful the these tarnished pieces look. I'll have to get out my grandmother's coffee set.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutley get that set out. You'll be glad you did. Eye candy every time you see it I bet.
DeleteI was the polisher for the silver growing up. Now I have none...except jewelry. That I do keep polished. Great post - loved the photos!

Thanks Donna. I polish my jewelry as well. I'm a silver gal, no gold. Toothpaste is my go to polishing medium. Leaves a little of the patina in the grooves.
