Still Here

It's been such a long time since I posted.  Almost a year.

Wanted to share a bit of what I've been up to.

I am diving into a few calls for fiber art & my local Holiday Show.

I have lots of smaller vessels of all sorts, on display for sale at

Crooked Tree Art Center.

I will be at the kick off party tomorrow, Friday Nov. 10th. Hope you can stop by.

There will be wine!

Sneak peek of my offerings.

Other things I've been up to in the studio & beyond:

A little book binding repair. My 1975 copy of The Joy of Cooking.

 She was in rough shape.
Broke out the book binding skills.

Made a new cover.

Created a stencil of the original title font.

Used book cloth & marbled paper from my stash.

Did some foraging of ramps on North Fox Island this spring. Pickled ramps & ramp pesto from the leaves. YUM!!!

I can't go camp on North Fox without a hand stitching project.

There is a blueberry U pick farm just up the road. We make sure we have 20-30 lbs. in the freezer to get us through the year. Plus we discovered a mulberry tree in the park we walk in almost daily. Beautiful.

We have been to some wonderful places over the past year. My go to place to post what I've been up to is Instagram. Follow me there & you can see more day to day goings on.

A to Z Reflections & Beyond

It was a busy Spring for me with lots of requests for custom fabric vessels. I still found time to participate in the April A to Z Challenge and crossed the finish line.

This was my 4th year participating in the A to Z April challenge. It felt a bit easier this time
in some ways, not in others. I am a very organized person
(ask anyone who knows me) so getting the posts done,
many ahead of the date which takes a lot of the pressure off,  was not too tough.

All during the year I make notes of blog ideas as they pop into my head or present themselves in other ways. A conversation, a link I've followed , an artist I admire, a process that intrigues me.
I created a word document with ideas for each letter I can refer to when April rolls around from my jotted ideas. It's good to have paper & a writing utensil with you at all times!

Jeremy, your graphics are great! Thank you for the hard work on these.

As the month unfolds I find creating posts gets easier with the repetition.
That alone is worth the effort. The trick now is to carry it on through the rest of the year.
I think many of us who participate struggle with that.

One thing I find interesting, and a frustration to me, is that there are very few visual artists who participate in the challenge. I wonder why that is & why it continues to be that way. Any ideas folks?

The hard part this year for me was finding the time to look at other blogs, make comments, & reply to the comments on my posts. Creating a post for each day is time consuming. As an artist (or a writer) we need to carve out time for our own creative process, let alone getting involved with so many others. Is it because my art requires lots of hands on time away from a computer, where as writers are creating as well as following & responding at their computers? Dunno.

This year the main list (which I was part of) was not monitored to remove those who signed up for the challenge but did not follow through. Not a huge deal for me but I was disappointed every time I went somewhere that didn't amount to anything. Some one else mentioned to have a list by category would be helpful. I agree. Also lots of participants did not have links back to their blogs
when they commented.  This was encouraged in the past.
I would love to see people make it part of their commenting routine.

A few of my favorite finds this year:

Wendy's Waffle
During the month Wendy had an alter ego, Alice, who I found delightful.

The Versesmith
A fun poem every day.

Trudy at Reel Focus was a regular visitor & commented often.
Thanks Trudy!   Plus she mentioned me in her reflection, I'm honored!

Rob from England visited.
That is one of the things I love about the challenge.
You make cyber friends all over the world.
His random posts are fun to read.

Mandy, an intrepid world traveler dropped by
from With Love about the travels of she & her husband.
Visually a lovely blog.

One more. I think Donna & I have been following each other since a couple challenges back.
She is a great writer. Her posts this year were so interesting.
Her images she used as a jumping off point were thought provoking.
Donna B McNicol, Author
Thanks Donna for being one of my regulars.

I apologize for not mentioning everyone, but you all understand I'm sure.

I think I only got a comment from one Moderator. Maybe 2.

Overall I did not get as many comments as I had hoped. Maybe my comments here will encourage more visual artists to jump on board. Overall views appeared to be down this year.
We may all be suffering from too much screen time.
The jury is out on my participation next year.

P is for Pantry What's in Yours?

I love to cook. A well stocked pantry is important.
To be short one item for a recipe can be maddening.
I also get to show off some of my fabric bins as they grace my pantry for specific items.

The truth is I'm an organizing addict. Is freak the right word?
I'll let my friends be the judge of that. Anyone care to weigh in? I can take it.

Open shelving is great if you have the space. I like to be able to see everything easily.
Helps when you are making a shopping list.
It's as bad to buy an extra of what you already have as it is to be short.

I recently winnowed my collection of cook books.
It all becomes variations on a theme at some point.
Plus who doesn't love food sites & Pinterest?

I transfer most items to glass for storage.
An entire shelf full of anxious participants.

Open wire drawers work well for dry storage of those things
that like to sprout if you aren't watching.
I use lots of onion & garlic so it's not a problem here.

Did you notice the fabric box above labeled chalk?

I have a chalk board wall in my pantry. Gotta have a place to play with design.
I haven't changed from this ampersand in ages. I need to attend to that.
Maybe after the A to Z is over...is anyone else getting worn out?

A couple past designs on the wall.

It's not all about the food for me as you can see. Ways to express creativity always come into play.

What's important in your pantry?

Tid Bits on Thursday

Summer is in full swing and I am drawn to the textures & colors in the garden.
Had to bring this teeny floral arrangement inside after the bush got a pruning.

Got this sweet ceramic frog at an art fair last summer. Time to put it to good use.
Hosta leaves make such a great statement on their own.

Dunno, just had to take picture of these eggs.

One of my recent creations now graces the fabric table with one of my favorite tools,
 the everyday clothes pin.

So here's the real reason for all the above photos and noticing tiny details in everyday things.
Here goes, transparency time.
Above is all the "stuff" I took to the art fair last week end. I sold one piece.
Despondency ensued the next day. After a bit of a pity party, a good walk in the park,
and some time in the studio looking at inspirational ideas saved over time, I'm ready to move on.
I figure all this experimentation with fabric, paint, stencils, stitching was
a learning experience that  can be applied to bigger things.
The rest of the summer will be spent just playing around in the studio to uncover old & new ideas, some sketching, going back to playing with photography...
& some great travel coming up for us in a few weeks.
Not to mention lots of music & visit from friends on the calendar.

Lots of the storage items I've made are being put to use in my own home.
That was plan B all along. There is still areas I can add more bins to, & I will.

When all else fails, there is always beer. Love these corn hole boards at Right Brain Brewery.
It could be my self portrait from last weekend.  Thanks for "listening".

Stencils of Summer Plant ID & OMP Art Fair

Had another glorious week end on North Fox Is. Does anyone know what this flower is?
It is a spectacular little bit of Mother Nature. The blooms hang down.
If you turn them over you see this.

I would love to know what they are. Anyone?

We have rediscovered tent camping thanks to North Fox
& the FUN people we've met on the overnights. This is a panorama of the field.
The red nose is us with our little tent next to the wing. Cozy.
About a dozen planes "dropped in" over the week end.

Saturday, July 21 9 am to 4 pm.
Come take a look at all the vendors, get a snack from a food truck, listen to some music,
take home some art, & support your local artists!

All my stencils have names and a number.
Anyone who wants a custom vessel can easily choose the images they want .

I've cut lots of new stencils this summer. here is the line up...
with example on fabric.

These last 2 haven't made it onto canvas yet. I need to fix that.

 Hope to see you Saturday!
