Birds of a Feather

Having woods out our back window gives us lots of opportunity to bird watch.

The past couple summers we have Barred Owls we hear at night & in the morning behind our home.
Recently one showed up during the day & perched outside the window. Link is the call we hear.
He's in there, can you see him? Dead center below the clump of snow. The camouflage is amazing.

What a treat to have him hang out for us to watch for awhile.

#AtoZChallenge 2019 Tenth Anniversary blogging from A to Z challenge letter

I love dolls. Saw this wonderful owl ages ago and recently found the artist, Ann Wood ,
who created him has the pattern for sale.  I think I could use my canvas scraps
in different colors for the plumage.  She has lots of other tutorials & patterns
for other birds as well as all kinds of inspiration for hand sewing.

Awhile back I did a flamingo card for an ATC (artist trading card) group I participate in.

I created it as a pop up since a fold was needed to accommodate the long legs.

Here is the image  that gave me the idea.

Have to include the Puffins. I was inspired on a trip to Kodiak Is. in Alaska a few years ago.

The image that gave me the proportions to use in my stencils.

What birds do you see in your "neck of the woods" ?

  1. Adorable flamingos with their long legs!
I'm not a bird watcher, so don't know most of the names of the birds in my area. The usual suburban ones of course, and bigger ones since a few blocks away turns either agricultural or rural. Some kind of owl big enough to decapitate a raptor, cleanly with no blood! I've taken to warily scanning my yard my first trip out each morning! At least the dogs don't care about dead bird carcasses.

    1. Yikes, bloodless. That's impressive. There are stories of the eagles we have around here carrying off small dogs. Just sayin'

  2. I am in love with owls lately for some reason. This one is so cute. The penguins are great also! I'm gonna have to follow you to see the rest.

    2. May not be any more birds in the challenge. There are a lot of birds in my "doll" Pinterest board. Owls seem to have some mystical quality people are drawn to.

    1. Glad you stopped by. Not a fan of seagulls, so noisy & annoying at the beach. Pigeons of the Sea I call them. But they are pretty in flight.

  4. Hello fellow A-to-Zer! I love your owl pic; he is very hard to see.

We have a goldfish pond at our house, so we get lots of bird attention. Some of it is slightly unwelcome. One spring, an egret decided to treat our pond as a buffet table. He was a gorgeous bird, but he ate lots of our fish, so... I mean, we weren't really sure how to feel about him. But! There was also a duck who decided to nest next to our pond. We got very fond of that duck. We named her "Splorpy" because that was the noise of her water-landings. And the ducklings were amazingly adorable, and we watched them waddle off after their mother to a nearby stream. I cannot express the cuteness.

    1. Fun story! We had a pond with fish, the raccoons were the diners at our house. Went to a fountain on a rock bed instead. Duck babies are the cutest. Thanks for stopping by with your tale.

  6. Wow, his camouflage is amazing!
We have very few birds in our garden because we stopped feeding them due to our cats - we have 2 Savannahs who can jump up to 9ft vertically, so we didn't want them taking out the local wildlife (they are only allowed in the garden). My mother has 2 bird tables though and they get lots of sparrows, magpies, starlings, blackbirds etc. What is really funny is that all the birds, even the really big ones are afraid of the robin! ;)

  7. 9 feet! That's amazing. We have two feeders way off the ground suspended between our home & a tree on a wire so no other animals can get to them. My hubby is a problem solver. Used to have Palliated wood peckers that so fun to have around, then they started pecking on the house so we cut off their suet. Your ghost stories are fun!

  8. Love this post and all your birdy goodness. I'm a fan of crows and ravens and always enjoying both listening and seeing them.

  9. We can often hear screech owls and great horned owls, but never get to see them. That's so cool that your owl paid you a visit!
I love all kinds of birds for art projects. Yours are great!

  10. The owl in the woods is amazing... like a "magic eye" photo.

We moved to Arizona last year and I love hearing the birdsong when I go for walks. I have't identified most of them, and I still keep hoping to see a Road Runner one of these days!

  11. Great read and fun photos! I'm way behind in reading/commenting on blogs due to a Disney vacation followed by out of town family time. Phew! I hope to catch up next week.
